Molly Roberts is a photography editor, curator and photographer; she recently joined National Geographic Magazine as a Senior Photography Editor after 15 years as Chief Photography Editor at Smithsonian Magazine. Previously she led the Washington Post Magazine and USA Weekend photography team.

With 25years experience in the magazine publishing world, she is responsible for the content and appearance of many magazines, books, web sites and apps.  Roberts is an advocate for powerful visual storytelling and human rights and recently created the non-profit HumanEyes USA to present documentary photography projects in public spaces and to use powerful imagery to help illuminate complex issues facing America. Also committed to developing diverse voices in the media, she is currently the acting director and board member of the DC based, Women Photojournalists of Washington.

“As a teenager, I stumbled upon the work of Robert Frank and Diane Arbus in the Harvard Square bookstore and time stood still.
I decided it was the most revolutionary art form I’d ever experienced and I wanted it in my life. Since then I studied photography at UMD with John Gossage and along the way with many other generous mentors and creative souls. I have worked as a photographer for newspapers, magazines and books. I have edited books, magazine and special issues. I’ve judged photo contests and given lectures. Mostly, I’ve just enjoyed a life made richer by photography, a medium that is wonderfully suited to explore and make sense of the world and the issues that surround us.”

Roberts curated the exhibitions; “Uncommon Beauty” for Art Works Projects in Chicago, “Faces of the Child Migrant Crisis” for HumanEYES USA, “Home” for the Osso Bay Biennale at the University of Texas at Corpus Christi and was a co-curator for a Bronx Documentary Center exhibit “ Visual Stories Exploring Global Themes”. She has been an invited reviewer, speaker, panelist and judge for various professional organizations and is involved in educational photo reviews and panels for National Magazine Awards, Look3 Festival of the Photograph, Santa Fe Review, New York Times Portfolio Review, International Center for Photography, Women Photojournalists of Washington, PhotoNOLA, Medium Festival of Photography, Texas Photo Roundup, League of Conservation Photographers, Nature’s Best, APA, Lens Culture, Society of American Travel Writers, Social Documentary Network, Fotoweek DC, Artworks Projects Emerging Lens award and FotoEvidence. Originally from Texas, she lives in the DC area with her husband, animal menagerie and an unmanageable number of photography books.
